The Indonesian Marketplace is FINALLY over! I’ve been planning this event the whole semester. It’s a food-tasting session & a display of traditional Indonesian items (some are for sale). I forced all my Indonesian friends to help out by using the “aren’t you proud of your country???” card. Two APSA members actually showed up to help and my room-mate did too so I was ecstatic.
For the marketplace, I had my mom ship a whole bunch of things from Indonesia
I’m so glad I was surrounded by friends during the event because some annoying incidents happened…people just came for the food and left without even looking at the things or chatting with any of us at the tables! I just feel that that is extremely rude but I guess you’ll get people who are there solely for the free food at every event.
There was also a girl who kept acting as if she was the one who planned the event and I was so incredibly annoyed. I hate people who take credit for others’ work. She didn’t do anything! All she did was show up at the event, declared she’s Indonesian, went straight for the Loyolan reporter, grabbed food and left without doing anything to help out.
My fellow Indonesians and I are also worried because we feel she is not the best representation of our culture. She has lived in America
Things definitely went uphill after she left. I got so much support from LMU staff members. Chimin and Denise from the Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) were awesome. *Chimin & Denise, if you’re reading this: Thank you so much for showing up, helping me email all the Indonesians at LMU and letting me use OISS as storage space. Thank you thank you thank you so much!*
I’m donating all the stuff to OISS and to Dr Harper from the Art Department
I had fun planning the event but I’m just so glad it’s over. Oh, a mix-up happen and APSA (yeap, I got my club to sponsor my event) & BSU (Black Student Union) both requested a sound system. Luckily we’re all friends so we just took turns playing our music. It was really funny hearing gospel music, followed by Indonesian pop hits followed by even more gospel music.

Thank God the gamelan concert’s over! Dr Humphreys made us rehearse the whole day so I was extremely exhausted by the time the concert started. By the time the West African portion of the concert came and I was only conscious through sheer willpower. My friends told me I looked like I’m completely not into the dancing, which is kinda true since I was concentrating more on staying awake than dancing.
I messed up some of my parts in the gamelan part of the concert but luckily it’s Balinese music and I’m very sure the only ethnomusicologist in the room in Dr Humphreys so it’s ok. If anyone tells me it sounds wrong, all I have to do is act offended and demand, “Are you an ethnomusicologist? Are you Balinese or have lived in Bali Bali
I told my friends to sit in the front row during the concert without telling them that audience members get dragged on-stage during one of the dances…and everyone in the front row’s fair game. They were ready to slaughter me. I was nice to Christi though. She has supported every single one of my concerts so I told her to sit right in the middle where it’s hard for the dancers to reach her.
