Hello All,
This month has gone by so fast and I can’t believe it is almost Thanksgiving! I haven’t been up to very much lately, but last week I went to the midnight premiere of Breaking Dawn. The movie wasn’t that great (no surprise there), but I got to see it with a bunch of people from my dorm as part of my dorm’s theme housing program. I live in Whelan Hall and we have this cool program called the Los Angeles Experience. Our RA’s organize trips out into the city to help us experience L.A. Most of the events are free and they are only for people living in Whelan. So far this year we have had the opportunity to go to Hollywood, hike to the Hollywood sign, be part of a live game show audience, go to the Museum of Tolerance, and of course go see Breaking Dawn. They try to plan at least one event every month. I haven’t been able to go to all of them, but I’m really glad the opportunity is there. For me this has been a great way to get to know people in my dorm who I don’t see or talk to all the time and also to get to know my RA’s, RD, and RM. Being from out-of-state this has been a great way for me to get to know the city. Whelan is not the only freshman dorm with a theme housing program, but all of the theme housing is different. Some dorms also have living learning communities. These are more focused on academics and some are specific to certain majors. I am not extremely familiar with these, but I have heard good things about them from a lot of my friends. If you are looking for information on these follow this link http://www.lmu.edu/studentlife/studentaffairs/housing/studenthousing/lifeinthehalls/livinglearningcommunities.htm
I think everyone should take theme housing and living learning communities into consideration when thinking about what dorm you would like to live in your freshman year. It has really helped to make a difference in my freshman experience and I would definitely recommend taking advantage of these opportunities.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
