Hello Everyone,
Today's topic is working on campus. SInce I have started college I have had work study and have used it to my advantage. Here at LMU I have worked different work study jobs. My first semester I was an assistant for a professor in the women's studies department. It was a pretty chill job, I was by myself and mostly did homework. When she needed something it would be more on the lines of making copies, checking out books for her, sorting her mail, or any other office work. She was very cool and was always asking me how I was doing in school and if I wanted more hours or to cut back. I was there for a year. During my second semester I got a job as a program coordinator for prospective transfer students (Transfer Preview Day). It consisted of organizing about 2 events a semester, lots of email and phone calls, contacting faculty and speakers and student volunteers. Although it was a job that I would sometimes cause me headaches I treasure it very much. I was there for a year and half.
Currently I have two jobs,I work for the Registrar Office since January 2011 and I work in the office for the Vice President of Enrollment Management since May 2011. Both jobs are very fun and different. At the Registrar something fun is going on and there is always something to do. it helps distract me from the stress of hw. At the VP office, it's a bit more calm. I have more opportunities to catch up on my studies but when there is a deadline it is BUSY! It is bitter sweet that this is my last semester at both jobs since I will be student teaching full time in the Spring.
I HIGHLY recommend you to work on campus, whether it be through workstudy, T-work, or L-Work (investigate who has these funds if you are not awarded work-study!!!) You get more involved on campus, understand how the different departments function, and get more interaction with faculty and other students. Also, they know that your main priority is school! They are flexible with your schedule and needs. They are aware of midterm and finals week and even let you have a few days off to study OR they let you study at work! Best thing is that you work 20 hours a week, so you have plenty of time to do hw and have a life! Also most jobs are Monday through Friday so you have the weekends OFF!! AND...most jobs are above the minimum wage!!
Really look into these opportunities! I am very happy with my work experience here at LMU. Also think NETWORKING!! (that is key to success!!! you never know when you might need a letter of recommendation from the Vice President, Dean, Financial Aid Coordinator, etc).
Have a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!
-Adrienne
